Licensed Home Child Care
What is Licensed Home Child Care?
It is a complimentary alternative to the "traditional" form of center-based day care. It is highly flexible, quality, educational programming for children in private-home locations provided by trained caregivers.
Why Choose Home Child Care?
- flexible days and hours of child care available including evenings, weekends, holidays and up to 24 hours per day
- licensed for children birth to 12 years of age
- child care is provided in a safe, secure, educational, "homey" atmosphere
- carefully screened, selected, approved, supported, monitored caregivers who keep current with early childhood education development issues and trends
- child care is provided to smaller groups of children allowing for more individual care and attention (children can be placed with their siblings in mixed age groupings)
- professional support for families in selecting and using a home child care program
What does it mean to have "Licensed" Home Child Care?
In the same way licensed child care centres are monitored, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and the City of Greater Sudbury monitor home child care. This ensures appropriate levels of care and safety are continuously met. Licensed home child care programs must comply with regulations set out under the Day Nurseries Act (DNA) which ensures that homes are safe, stimulating and not crowded with too many children.
The DNA defines private home day care as "the temporary care for reward or compensation of 5 children or less who are 12 years of age and under, where such care is provided in a private residence, other than the home of the parent or guardian of any such child, for a continuous period not exceeding 24 hours."
- Furthermore, according to the DNA, the number of children cared for can be:
- 5 day care children,
2 children, who are under 2 years of age;
3 children, who are under 3 years of age;
5 children, who are under 6 years of age.
